Mom's Famous Butter Mints

Mom makes the BEST buttermints. In fact, they are famous. When I was 16, mom's mints were featured in the Salt Lake Tribune Lifestyle section of the newspaper. There she was - in her black and white polka-dot silk blouse with her "proud daughter" Janis standing by her side admiring her great mints. Reflecting back on this picture, this could have been one of my "most embarrassing looks" of life as I had a grin from ear to ear and a HUGE blue bow tied back in my hair! Mom has unselfishly made these mints for hundreds of people - for mom's 5 daughter's wedding receptions, grandchildren's receptions, teacher favors, wedding/baby shower treats, and just to say "I love you". Mom even made them for her OWN 90th birthday party where over 400 people knew what a treat they were getting! Many have asked for her recipe and help in making these delicious melt-aways (including Vern Glade of Glade's Candy Company who makes the famous taffy that we all eat on July 4th), but no one quite has her secret touch. Often the mints turn to sugar before the process is completed. Her secret? She says all it takes is a marble slab, a sunny day, and quick fingers to cut them into bite-size pieces. But for those of us who have watched her, we know it also takes lots of LOVING care!
